Virtual Private Networks are useful if you want to access websites which are blocked geographically, however claims that they offer better security are not always true. A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel from your computer to the VPN provider and from there to the internet services you are connecting to. You are only moving the trust issues you have with your ISP to the VPN provider.
Tom Scott’s video counters some of the VPN hype.
If you want to use a VPN to bypass geographic blocks, I suggest that you download the Opera Browser. It has a built-in VPN with servers in Europe, Americas and Asia.
Alternatively, the TOR Browser uses a relay network for anonymous browsing.
